Maxine Tuan, JD
Executive Director, Attorney

Maxine began her legal journey with St. Andrew Legal Clinic through a clerkship and externship during law school. After graduation, she became a staff attorney at the Hillsboro branch. Maxine last served as an equity partner at Wyse Kadish LLP in Portland before returning to SALC as Executive Director.
Beyond her legal career, Maxine is deeply involved in community service. Maxine volunteers her time representing children involved in family-related disputes. She serves on the Board of the Oregon Women Lawyers Foundation, is on the Board of the Multnomah Bar Association (MBA) and a former President of the MBA Young Lawyers Section, teaches family law at Lewis & Clark Law School as an adjunct professor and for the Paralegal Program at Portland Community College. She is also a past President of the Oregon Asian Pacific American Bar Association and a mentor through the Lewis & Clark Law School and Oregon State Bar mentorship programs. Maxine also serves as pro tem judge in Washington County, presiding over the restraining order, stalking order, landlord-tenant, and small claims dockets.

Priya joined SALC as a paralegal in 2024, bringing over a decade of experience as a family law attorney in Mumbai, India. Currently pursuing a Paralegal Certification at Portland Community College, Priya is eager to support SALC’s attorneys and clients with family law matters while deepening her understanding of Oregon's legal system. Outside of work, Priya enjoys long drives, shopping sprees, movie nights, and sharing great meals with her husband and friends.

As a former telecom professional and mediator, Connie went to Law School and graduated in 2006. Connie got her start as a volunteer at SALC and was hired shortly thereafter.

James received his Law Degree in 1981 and after serving as a law clerk and more in the 80's he came to SALC in 1990 and has called it home since. In his spare time, James is an avid gardener and a passionate Duck supporter.

Joji, originally from Portland, found her passion for law while working as a substance abuse counselor, driven by their desire to help others. Starting her legal career as a solo practitioner, she volunteered with SALC for the Night Clinic program. Now, she is glad to be part of a nonprofit dedicated to serving those in need.
Outside of work, Joji enjoys hiking and playing music at local jam sessions, finding balance and fulfillment in both professional and personal pursuits.
Ruban Sejas

Before joining SALC as a Law Clerk in 2025, Ruben was a dedicated volunteer while attending Seattle University School of Law. Born in Bolivia and raised in Milwaukie, Ruben is passionate about advocating for Spanish-speaking families and supporting their access to justice. In their role, they assist attorneys in ensuring smooth operations and exceptional client care. Ruben is honored to serve the people of Oregon. Outside of work, they enjoy spending time with their three dogs, learning new languages, reading, and watching movies.

Simon was born and raised in Portland and is honored to be serving the good people of his home state. Before dedicating his life to the law, Simon was a creative writing teacher and actor. In his free time, he loves working out, playing video games, and going to comedy shows.
Eric Schmidt-Chen

Eric earned his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and his law degree from Willamette University College of Law. While in law school, he worked with Student Legal Services at Portland State University, where he provided free legal assistance to students and developed a commitment to accessible, trauma-informed advocacy. Choosing to continue with PSU's Student Legal Services after law school, he completed Oregon’s Supervised Practice Portfolio Examination (SPPE) program primarily through his work in housing and family law.
Outside the office, he recharges by spending time with his wife, Shining, and their growing family, including their dog, Cornflake, and their cat, Ruby, who keep him humble and always on schedule.
